Oversized Embarcadero Art

Last Updated August 23, 2002.

There is a trend towards giant pieces of art for the Embarcadero that relate little to the waterfront.

Three Examples of Oversized Art:

1) the 60-foot sculpture proposed for Rincon Park, 2) the 50-foot South Beach Park sculpture and, 3) the Coke Bottle at Pac Bell park. Go to "Rincon Park" for more information about "Cupid's Span." (Click on any image for a larger picture.)

Two Examples of Meaningful Art at an Appropriate Scale:

1) the 20-foot Eric Hoffer memorial near Pier 39 and, 2) the 15-foot sculpture and fountain "Aurora" by Ruth Asawa near Howard Street. Hoffer was a San Francisco longshoreman, author, and philosopher. Asawa is a San Francisco artist known world-wide for her origami-inspired work.
