This giant pipe organ is proposed for Justin Herman Plaza. It has 6,000 pipes and weighs 40 tons. It was constructed for a 1915 fair. Its shell is modern and has evolved into a 50-foot-high structure. Little input was sought from neighbors before the old board of supervisors began voting for this project. As this cover story, "
Organ Failure", from "S.F. Weekly" points out, there are serious questions about whether this indoor organ will work out-of-doors. A similar organ in San Diego was designed to be outside. This one was not.
